Abstract

Train accidents at rail way crossing area can be reduced with information display about train arrival. Train arrival information can be done using a many ways, which one using Wireless Sensor Network (WSN). WSN is a set of sensors that communicate wirelessly using personal area network. WSN have a several function which are monitoring, controlling and data aggregation. These functions can be used in variety of field, and one of field is train monitoring. Each node in wireless sensor network communicate using ZigBee/IEEE 802.15.4 standard. ZigBee operates in 2.4 GHz frequency with low transmission data rates that used for communication data sensor and ZigBee support many node to create network with low power consumption and low cost technology. This research aims to propose wireless sensor network design for train arrival information at railway crossing to display countdown timer. The system design is simulated using train simulation with two different velocity. Based on simulation result and analysis, the system design is able to to identify object as a train, calculate train velocity with average error 4.076% to 6.85% and display the Countdown time of arrival train using train simulation with average 0.21 s to 0.488 s.
