Abstract

One of the motivations for learners to learn Japanese is their interest in Japanese pop culture, such as anime, manga, Vtuber, songs, and others. Pop culture products can also be an interesting and motivating learning resource for such learners. This study examines pop culture products used as learning resources for college-level Japanese learners to learn the Japanese language. This study used a quantitative approach with a survey research technique, and the research instrument was a questionnaire. The respondents consisted of 75 college-level Japanese language learners. From the results of this study, it is known that most respondents use pop culture products as a source of learning Japanese (96%). The most used pop culture products are anime, songs, movies, manga, drama and games, VTuber, and novels. In each pop culture product, learners learn various kinds of language knowledge. In each type of pop culture product, there are characteristics of the language knowledge learned according to the character of the pop culture product. For example, for anime/film/drama, learners tend to use them to learn everyday sentences, vocabulary, and pronunciation. For songs, most learners use them as a source of learning vocabulary, phrases, pronunciation, and intonation. As for manga, learners mostly use them to learn vocabulary, kanji, and sentences often used daily. The results of this study are expected to be an input for Japanese language teachers to create teaching materials using pop culture products that are appropriate and in demand by learners.
