Abstract
This study aims to analyse prospective interns’ perceptions of keigo use in the Japanese workplace. Keigo is a system of honorific language in Japanese that includes teineigo, sonkeigo, and kenjōgo, reflecting social hierarchy, politeness, and professionalism in communication. Despite its important role in the workplace, foreign learners, particularly prospective interns from Indonesia, still experience difficulties in mastering and appropriately using advanced levels of keigo. This research employs a survey method. Data were collected through a Likert-scale questionnaire (1–4) distributed to 73 prospective intern respondents and through qualitative interviews with 5 participants. The results indicate that, in general, respondents hold positive perceptions of the use of keigo in the Japanese workplace. Based on the first indicator, the majority of respondents stated that keigo is a very important component of workplace communication. Furthermore, regarding the second indicator, respondents perceived that the appropriate use of keigo by native Japanese speakers is essential in a professional context. The findings of this study suggest that keigo is perceived as a crucial element in maintaining professionalism, fostering harmonious workplace relationships, and demonstrating mutual respect in communication within the Japanese work environment. However, the findings also reveal that although prospective interns acknowledge the importance of mastering keigo, some still perceive the use of basic polite forms, such as desu/masu, as sufficient, indicating a gap between theoretical awareness and practical understanding of keigo’s functions in actual workplace situations.
