Abstract

Speech acts are among the most important elements of pragmatics, directive speech acts hold an important role in the context of education. This study examines directive speech acts in the animated film Madogiwa no Totto-Chan, which is adapted from a novel by Tetsuko Kuroyanagi. Directive speech acts play an important role in education because they direct students’ behavior and responses. This study aims to identify the types and characteristics of directive speech acts used by teachers at Tomoe Gakuen school in the film. The method used is qualitative descriptive, with data collected through observation of dialogues, scenes, and situations that contain directive speech acts. Data analysis was conducted using Bach and Harnish’s (1979) theory of directive speech acts and Searle’s (1979) concepts of direct and indirect speech acts. From the findings of 29 directive utterances, it was found that direct and indirect speech acts functioned as requests, questions, commands, prohibitions, and permissions. The most dominant expression was ～かい (kai), which made the commands easy for children to understand and prompted immediate obedience.
