Abstract

Optical amplifiers in fiber optic telecommunication systems is very important in overcoming the signal attenuation by amplifying optical signals directly without requiring conversion to electrical energy in advance. There are several types of optical amplifiers include erbium doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) and Raman amplifiers. Recently Raman amplifiers have started to attract much attention because the noise figure is smaller and less expensive than the EDFA. Raman scattering caused by the injection laser will amplify the signal that is sent. This event is called Stimulated Raman Scattering (SRS), this is the basis for the use of Raman amplifiers. This final project simulated the characteristics of Raman amplifier by solving the coupled Raman amplifiers equations using the Runge Kutta method. The result of these simulation will be analyzed in terms of gain characteristics. The changing of the input pump power, the input signal power, and the length of Raman fiber amplifier influence to the gain amplifier. This final project also analyzed the noise figure as a result of light scattering in Raman amplifier. The simulation results have shown that, Raman amplifiers can achieve a maximum gain of 35.6 dB. The input pump power which is effectively used to achieve the maximum gain is about 0.1 W - 1.5 W. Because if the input pump power is used more than 1.5 W, the gain will enter the saturation region. When we use a smaller input signal power the gain will be generated is greater. Based on the simulation result, the Raman amplifier will produce a noise figure of 2.86 dB.
