Abstract

The primary motivation for Japanese language learners to study the language is Japanese pop culture, which includes Japanese songs. With technological advancements, Japanese songs have become easily accessible and widely available for listening. Many learners who enjoy Japanese music utilize songs as a hobby and a medium for learning Japanese language. This study examines the strategies university-level Japanese language learners employ in studying the language through Japanese songs. The research adopts a quantitative approach, employing survey techniques and questionnaires as research instruments. The respondents consist of 68 university-level Japanese language learners. The study is based on the foreign language learning strategies theory by Chamot & Kupper (1989). The results reveal that the majority of respondents have used Japanese songs as a medium for learning the language. Learners employ metacognitive strategies, cognitive strategies, as well as social and affective strategies when studying with Japanese songs. The most commonly used strategy is cognitive strategies, followed by metacognitive strategies, while social and affective strategies are the least utilized. Among the metacognitive strategies, self-monitoring is the most frequently employed. For cognitive strategies, elaboration is the most commonly applied technique, whereas for social and affective strategies, self-talk is the most frequently practiced.
