Abstract

The torbangun leaves (Coleus amboinicusLour.) have various benefits for human health, however,the study about its safety on pregnant women has not been done. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of ethanol extract from torbangun leaves administration on mousedevelopment such asbefore and after implantationdeath and late ossification of the fetuses. This research used 24 female pregnant mouse that were administered torbangun leaves extract orally at dose level of 0; 0.56; 1.68 dan 3.36 g/kg body weight. The extract was given from the first day until eighteenth day of pregnancy. The oral administration of 3.36 g/kg BW showed the significant differences on number of before and after implantation deaths. A minimum dose of 0.56 g/kg BW caused a delay on fetal ossification. The percentage of fetuses with delayed ossification increased as the elevation of the dosage. The torbangun leaves extract consumption on pregnancy should be avoided because its potency to cause fetal death and fetal late ossification.
